Overview

Public and private schools, as well as individual students in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties will display works in a variety of subjects and media.

2024 Judges

1st-5th grade
Kit Loney is a visual artist, writer, and educator. She received a BFA in sculpture at the University of Massachusetts in 1978, and an MFA in Fiber Arts at the University of South Carolina in 1991. Her weavings, drawings, and handmade artist books have been included in exhibits at Art Fields, Public Works Art Center, City Gallery at Waterfront Park, Gibbes Museum of Art, South Carolina State Museum, and others. From 1992-1997 she taught papermaking throughout SC, and collaborated with TRACE with “Woven Dreams” exhibited at the Gilliard. She then taught art at Fort Johnson Middle School until 2017. Recently she has been an occasional artist-in-residence at various North Charleston schools, and has collaborated with TINYisPOWERFUL to present monster-making workshops in local schools, at 701 Gallery in Columbia, and Columbia Museum of Art. She began writing poetry in 2005, and is currently writing a novel about Pilgrim, a time-travelling cockroach.

6th-12th grade
Indira Bailey, Ph.D., an art educator and contemporary artist living and working in Orangeburg, SC, will select the winning art entries in grades 6-12. She studied at the Pratt Institute and The Pennsylvania State University. Bailey’s art represents lived experiences of the African Diaspora. Her mediums include watercolor and oil paintings, graphite, and stained glass. Bailey has had several solo and group exhibitions throughout the East Coast. She is a licensed K-12 art educator and has taught high school art classes and community art programs for children for over 20 years. For Bailey, painting is a source of healing for children and believes that every child is creative. Bailey is an Assistant Professor of Art Education at Claflin University. Overview

Public, private, and home-schooled high school students in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties will display 3-dimensional works in a variety of subjects and media. Award winners selected by Cristina Victor.

Cristina Victor is a Cuban-American interdisciplinary who’s work always stems from the hyphen. As an artist and arts educator she is committed to creating and facilitating generative exchanges about the complexities of our collective and individual human experience through an array of approaches most recently including ceramic sculpture, mixed media drawing, textile installation, public flag projects, curation and accessible arts programming. As a maximalist she produces her work with deep consideration for the power of design, color and language.

Solo exhibitions include Norco College Art Gallery, Norco, CA (2023), Ditch Projects, Eugene, OR (2023), Basketshop Gallery, Cincinnati, OH (2018).

She received her AA from the New World School of the Arts, Her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently based in Charleston, South Carolina and is a Professor at the College of Charleston, Director of SASI (Studio Art Summer Immersion) Program and teaches Ceramics at the artist collective, Studio Union.
